Language plays an important role in American culture. It shapes the way by which people perceive the world and aspects of life. Words, as much as people do not like to admit it, can hurt and destroy people in ways unimaginable. Much of the American language is dated, and many colloquialisms are no longer acceptable in society. Plenty of old-time figures of speech are sexist in nature and exclude or degrade women. It is important to educate Americans on sensitive and inclusive language, in speaking and writing. Some of these changes may be unwelcome and cumbersome at first, but they are important if America is to move forward as a truly inclusive and unbiased society.
