What does abolition mean? And, how can we imagine our current world?
Abolition means to end or eliminate; from a practice, a system or anything else : such as the death penalty; and in history most often used term coined throughout the ending of slavery in favor of abolition.
The abolition of prison is a much needed process and will fix many of societal issues. Prison is systematically used mainly to punish underclass individuals maintaining the same repetitive cycle of violence, rape, robbery etc. The abolishment of prison will force to conduct programs that will encourage self-development and nurture the psychological disadvantage or mental state in which positioned another. Over 1 trillion of dollars is spent in this type of institution that has not proven to yield effective results statistically. Upon further research, those who fall victim to jail time for minor criminal charges are subject to limitation when joining society again. It's more than a case of a child being grounded for bad behavior. It's a failed system that we should do away with...this is even more relevant and obvious the way the youth are funnel away in school-to-prison pipeline.
A book I am interested in reading and recommend is Michelle Alexander " The New Jim Crow" touching on mass incarceration. This book was out before "Black Lives Matter" was even a hashtag. Definitely on my bucket list.😉
