In what ways/methods/languages did media transform the way that people engage/view Asian-Americans during Covid-19? What can you do to fight against any forms of violence today?
When covid hit it was a very scary time. The way the media communicated the news made things a bit more concerning in my opinion. Although it is important to make drastic measures when involving the pandemic, not everything was done in a mannerly fashion in order to get things to end as soon as possible. But that is the sad reality of everything, that this is a very unlikely outcome to happen. The media has transformed the Asian Americans especially during this time because the virus originated from China. People are quick to point fingers and isolate those part of the community which isn't good. But I feel that our generation did a great enough job to try and protect them and not point them to be the problem.
Reading this article, I felt for this woman. I can not say I know what it feels like because I am not Asian. I do not face the same racism on a daily basis or get the comments she gets. However, I do have Asian friends, to think another human being to make such degrading remarks is seriously disturbing. The surge of violence and hate crimes against Asians in America can be blamed on how the media has covered the spread of Covid-19 linking it to Asians. While President Donald Trump has also not made it easy with the clear slander mentioning the pandemic as the " China virus". Action has been taken the first week Biden has been in office signing an executive action essentially banning the use of such language in the federal government. Although this is only the beginning to stop Asian hate I do think it is a big step forward.
Violence against Asian Women is very common now. Because people think Asian women are to blame for everything. They also think these women follow their own culture here and they don’t go out to work so they don’t know anything about rights and the outer world. They only thing they know is how to be a good house wife. As in Asian culture women are responsible for everything except earning money, they are the one who suffers the most. The article describes about the violence on Asian women which is really sad. Women had came out from their houses and know the world now. So this violence needs to be stoppe.
While the media has had a part in negatively transforming the way people engage and view Asian-Americans during Covid-19 the rhetoric used by former President Trump is what has led to the brunt of this hate. The former President referring to COVID-19 virus as the “Chinese Virus” has resulted in racial tensions at the expense of Asian-Americans. This tension is resulting in the rise in Anti-Asian attacks. Reporting any act of Asian hate is a good way to show others that these hateful attacks against Asians will not be tolerated.
During Covid-19, the ways/methods/languages that media transformed the way people engage/view Asian Americans is that Covid-19 was commonly said to be a virus that came from China or specifically because of China when it began. During Trump administration, former President repeatedly blamed China for bringing this virus into the world and the USA. The media, however criticizing such hateful words against Asian, especially Chinese Americans as a cause of the pandemic, would have made a greater difference by condemning more harshly against that wave of hatred by many Americans that were captured in cameras and videos, including the former President Trump's words on air. The violence an hate crime against Asian Americans that is increasing now in a form of physical assaults and murders took its root back there, which has taken its roots from many decades of racism against Asian Americans and many others in America. During this present time, the media should present the hate crimes as being hate crimes and make it clear by the evidences that so many attacks have been going on onto many elderly Asian American people which is not an coincidence but premeditated action or a hate crime, and it can be stopped by moving towards the truths and not personal opinions.
And if I could do anything to fight against any forms of violence today, the best thing I could do is to stick to the side of the victims rather than ignoring them and do something to fight against this violence by speaking against it. Currently those who have been the victims of violence and hate crimes have but a little community or a group or organizations to speak for them while at large their pain and suffering is almost invisible. Any form of violence today can be fought by supporting the truth wherever, whenever one can, and by rejecting the ideas and opinions that influence such violence.
The Media has transformed the way people engage with Asian Americans in many ways because of what’s into the media. During the beginning of COVID 19 everyone was scared and mad about what was going on because things would seemed unpredictable, people were frustrated and being ignorant about the virus. People engage in social media in many ways that make it a community as well, In my opinion since we have a community in social media we can help a lot of our Asian American people to overcome a lot of the struggles going on and have a safe place to come on and find ways to help each other.
The media tends to put out hate without noticing, based on the caption a lot of things can be interpreted so in my opinion I feel like since Media is so powerful it can also be used to form ways to fight against hate towards Asian Americans.
The media coverage of the pandemic could have been better if they constantly called the virus as the coronavirus or COVID-19, thus removing any association with people or place of origin. Such was the argument of World Health Organization who renamed the virus from Wuhan coronavirus to COVID-19 in order to remove any association between the virus and residents of Wuhan who were being targeted by other Chinese citizens and to reduce the bias people from other countries had against Chinese citizens. The article gives a great solution to the problem of bias against Asian Americans in the US by enrolling people charged of hate crimes into educational programs on hate crimes for two months. In addition, I also believe that expanding the definition of hate crime against Asian Americans would help punish those who commit more damaging hate crimes such as murder or physical assault.
The pandemic Covid 19 has brought a huge rise of many discrimination, racism incidents against the Asian Population in not only the US but the world because Media use their platform to tell us that this virus cane from them, it’s because of Asian people that we have a pandemic today as the former president like to say “ This virus came from China”. That’s why some people get frustrated whenever they see Asian people they would automatically assume that they are a threat to society because they’re going to infect people with corona. We can do many things to fight this violence today, first off by making the media to not getting people agitated by blaming the virus on Asian people and we can urge people to educate themselves about where the virus really came from and leave Asian people out of it, just like we’re suffering from the virus they’re suffering from them too but even worse, we should realize that all of us are humans being, anything could happen to anyone.
They think of this as a virus the chinese made from all those videos of them eating animals so people look at them in a bad view which is not the case the virus was already here it just wasnt in full effect but with american ignorance they choose to blame and section out the asian people. What can we do to fix this is to come together as a community rather then bring each one down and we all need to be equal
